Public sector housing rent rise announced

Increase of 3.1% from 1 April

Public sector housing tenants have some bad news just before Christmas.

Their rents are due to go up by 3.1% as of 1 April, the Department of Infrastructure has today announced.

It'll mean rent increases of between £1.74 a week for a one-bedroom flat and £2.96 a week for a three-bedroom house.

The DoI says the decision follows consultation with the Island’s 16 local housing authorities and aims to balance affordability for tenants with the need to pay off existing housing loans and fund investment in public sector housing.

Government subsidises public sector housing on the Island, with costs continuing to outstrip rental income - an estimate £5 million will be required to fund the difference over the next year.

People whose rents are covered by government will not be affected by the rise.

Department member Julie Edge says 1.1 per cent of the 3.1 increase will be ring-fenced for local authorities to maintain and improve their properties.
