Reayrt Aalin houses 'substandard' when first built, says commissioner

Local authority planning to demolish 36 homes in Peel

Properties in a housing estate in Peel which is being demolished were ‘substandard’ when they were first built.

That’s the view of the chair of Peel Commissioners which has advised the residents in Reayrt Aalin that they’ll have to leave their homes in the next two years.

Thirty-six houses – which were originally built in 1992 by Dandara - will be knocked down and then re-built; it’s after the commissioners ruled out spending around £100,000 per property to rectify issues.

Hazel Hannan says it’s an ‘unfortunate’ situation and the next ones have to be built to higher standards:

Manx Radio invited Dandara to respond to claims that inadequate building materials were used during the construction of the estate – it has declined to comment.
