Work has now started on the scheme

Work has begun on the East Quay regeneration scheme in Peel.

The timing of the works was agreed by the Department of Infrastructure, Peel Commissioners and local businesses to avoid conflict with the busy summer season.

Paul Carey & Sons Ltd has been appointed as the main contractor - the project is expected to be completed before summer 2023.

It will be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption to the public and, whilst each individual stage will require a road closure, access to all businesses and domestic properties will be maintained from one end of the quay or the other throughout.

The first section from the Manx Utilities pumping station (Shore Road/Victoria Road) to Weather Glass Corner closed yesterday (Monday).

All businesses are operating as usual.

The quay can be accessed from Station Place with traffic from Castle Street diverted onto East Quay by turning left at Crown Street.

The scheme includes improvements along the whole length of East Quay, from the road bridge to the footbridge; and also incorporating Station Place, Weatherglass Corner and Victoria Road (up to the Manx Utilities pumping station).

The carriageway and footways will be fully reconstructed to depths of up to one metre with a design life of 40 years and the carriageway has been designed to have the strength to allow crane operations into the harbour along the length of East Quay.

It will be finished in asphalt with the footways being finished in a high quality sandstone paving slab.

Along with the approved aesthetic footways will be widened to a minimum width of 1.5 metres to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Station Place will also be improved with larger pedestrian areas and improved accessibility for all users.

New street lighting will also be provided with new low energy lighting which will improve lighting across the carriageway, pavement and for harbour-side operations.

New service points will be installed along the quayside to provide harbour users with power and fresh water and provision will be made to allow for future on-street electric vehicle charging with underground ducting included throughout East Quay.
