Road safety a high priority says Home Affairs Minister

Bill Malarkey addresses the issue in Tynwald

Road safety ranks very highly amongst the Island police's priorities.

The Home Affairs Minister Bill Malarkey made the position clear in Tynwald this morning (Wednesday) referring to the Constabulary's four year strategic plan.

Middle MHK Bill Shimmins had raised the issue and also asked what's being done to reduce the number of traffic collisions on Island roads.

Mr Malarkey said public safety was as important as tackling financial crime, protecting vulnerable people and preventing drugs being brought to the Island.

He added that a comprehensive review of the Island's road safety strategy was being produced and would be launched in April.

However, Mr Malarkey said reducing the number of accidents would need a combined effort, and a change in society's attitudes to driving:
