Sea services future to become clearer in 2018?

Steam Packet offer withdrawn last summer

It’s likely government’s preferred way to address the long-term future of island sea services will be made clearer this year.

Last summer, Tynwald refused to back an offer by the Steam Packet which included a pledge to invest of £170 million in a new fleet, facilities and fare initiatives for both passenger and freight customers.

It would also have seen the user agreement extended to 2042.

The offer was subsequently withdrawn.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle says it’s vital the Island has the best possible passenger and freight services and ministers are continuing to explore a range of options for potential operators.
