Secondary school's energy costs more than double over two-year period

Ballakermeen High School's electricity, gas and rates will cost over £500,000 this year

Energy and rates costs at one of the Island's secondary schools have more than doubled over the last two years.

Ballakermeen High School paid £244,400 for electricity, gas and rates in the 2021-22 academic year, with that figure rising to £509,000 in the current year.

Fluctuating gas prices have had the biggest impact, with costs rising from £74,600 two years ago to in excess of £250,000 12 months later, before dropping back to £230,400 for the current year.

Electricity has risen from just over £120,000 in the 2021-22 period to more than £227,000, while rates have increased by almost £5,000.
