Six thousand pensioners had TV licence fees refunded

Rebate scheme to be reviewed

More than 6,000 pensioners have had their television licence fee refunded over the past year.

Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan confirmed the position in Tynwald this morning (Tuesday).

And he has vowed to review the way the rebate scheme operates after North Douglas MHK David Ashford said it was causing 'confusion' and needed to be simplified.

Anyone aged 75 and over who have been charged for their licence since September last year are being refunded as long they apply within three months.

It follows months of lobbying from ex-service organisations in the Island and concern expressed by members of the public.
