Southern 100: Tributes paid to rider and marshal

Alan Connor (50) and Liam Clarke (66) were killed at the Southern 100 on Tuesday

Losses described as 'devastating'

Tributes are being paid to two men who died following a serious incident in Tuesday night's Southern 100 qualifying session.

Police have now confirmed the rider who died was Alan Connor from County Meath, and the marshal was Liam Clarke from Wigan.

Alan has been described as a 'much-loved character around the paddock', whilst Liam has been lauded as a 'top supporter of pure road racing'.

RWEC Ltd Racing on Twitter said of Alan: "Didn't know him personally but knew of him as he'd been around road racing many, many years. A real stalwart of the scene, terrible loss. Thoughts go out to family and loved ones of Alan."

Regarding Liam, they added: "To lose riders is heartbreaking, but when it involves marshals and spectators - it's devastating. Some friends of ours were very close to Liam, so this one has been particularly tough to take if truth be told. Thoughts are with Liams family and friends at this time."

Kells Road Races took to Facebook with their statement, saying: "Such sad news this week from the Southern 100. We lost Alan Connor, a past Kells club member for many years. A much-loved character around the paddocks. Alan was a true custodian of the sport. Condolences to Alan's family and friends from all our club members."

They added: "We would also like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Liam Clarke, the marshal who passed away in the same accident. Both men supporting our sport in their own special way."
