Stanley resigns after 25 years as Captain of the Parish

Tributes paid to 'integral part' of Rushen community 

Tributes are being paid to the Captain of the Parish of Rushen who has resigned. 

Stanley Clucas was appointed in 1998 by former Lieutenant Governor Sir Timothy Daunt.

Arbory and Rushen Commissioners say he was an ‘integral’ part of the parish community and his resignation marks a ‘great loss’.

The authority adds he, and wife Pam, worked hard for the community with a ‘warm, positive and engaging’ attitude.

Mr Clucas was previously a commissioner and was active in his support to local charities and organisations.

In 2016 he donated the Ballachurry Nature Reserve to the Manx Wildlife Trust for residents and future generations to enjoy.

Mr and Mrs Clucas hosted a party for Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee there and supported a coronation party for King Charles III last year.

Clerk to Arbory and Rushen Parish Commissioners Phil Gawne said: "I’ve worked with Stan as a fellow Rushen commissioner, then as MHK for Rushen and latterly as clerk to Rushen Parish Commissioners. 

"Stan’s knowledge of Rushen Parish and the people who live here is beyond equal but it is his warm, gentle and generous nature for which he is best known. 

"He has been a perfect Captain of Rushen Parish and leaves large shoes to fill.” 

Stan Pilling, chair of the local authority, added: "I have always found Stan very accommodating and accessible in all matters. He is old school in his ways so always has time to give to people, whatever the project.  

"He has quietly been at the heart of many projects.  He is the encouragement that the parish needs and will miss. I would just like to say thank you from all the residents of Rushen.”   

Board member Kirrie Jenkins said: “Mr Clucas has been a steady hand on the tiller in Rushen for many years, setting the highest standards of public service to which we should all aspire. 

"Farmers never fully retire and I'm sure Stan will still be keeping his eye on what happens in the parish."   

The Lieutenant Governor will appoint a new captain of the parish in due course.
