Taxpayers help get clean water to Kenya

Four sand dams to collect water in rainy season

Five-thousand Kenyan people will have access to clean water, and be able to grow their food safely with the help of Manx taxpayers.

£85,600 of funds is being released from government coffers to charity, Excellent Development, for the construction of four sand dams in the country.

Severe water shortages in the semi-arid south-east Ukambani region plagues around 66 per cent of households there.

Women and children walk for around 12 hours a day collecting unsafe drinking water for everyday and agricultural use.

The solution; sand dams built across seasonal river channels made from reinforced concrete to capture water and sand during rainy periods.

Chair of the charity, David Jordan OBE, has said the money will transform lives.
