Teen fined £550 after being caught doing 57mph in 30 zone

18-year-old tells court he does 'truly regret' flouting rules

A teenager from Castletown has been ordered to keep his R-plates on for an additional six months after being caught travelling at almost double the speed limit.

Joshua George Cottrell, of Douglas Street, was driving at 57mph in a 30 zone on 2 June.

The 18-year-old was stopped by police who had seen his white BMW, which wasn’t displaying the restricted plates at the rear, overtaking on Douglas Road at 4.30pm.

He told officers: "I am on my way to the doctors."

Cottrell admitted both offences via postal admission.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse a letter he’d written to the court was read out which said: "I take full responsibility for my actions that day."

Fining him £550, and ordering him to pay £50 in prosecution costs, Magistrates also endorsed his driving licence with six penalty points.
