Tynwald Day: change to petition rules 'should make it easier'

Clerk of Tynwald discusses new guidance for 2023

Changes to the rules around petitioning on Tynwald Day should make it easier for residents to submit petitions this year.

That's the hope of the Clerk of Tynwald after amendments were made to the Guidance for Petitioners.

It means Manx residents no longer need to prove they have a personal interest or grievance in a matter before bringing their case before Tynwald Hill.

Jonathan King says; if in doubt, reach out:

Some well-known cases of successful petitions include Alan Shea's in 1991, which led to a change in law on homosexual acts on the Island, and recently; David Buttery's petition on the state of the Island's footpaths which made it through to the committee stages.
