Upset over Waverley Court refurbishment

Council says work is necessary

Public sector residents are contesting Douglas Council's decision to refit their kitchens, saying it's an unwanted waste of taxpayer money.

People renting at Waverley Court are between 80 and 90 years of age - they were informed of the refurbishments just over three weeks ago.

Some already have brand new kitchens installed, but the plan is to rip them out, with residents being moved out of their homes, and into fully-furnished apartments in Waverley while works take place.

The council says the work - which starts this weekend - will make the complex sustainable both financially and structurally and create uniformity in interior design.

But residents have complained to their constituency Douglas East MHK, Clare Bettison.

Chairman for Housing, Claire Wells, says she's happy to talk to anyone about the decision, explaining why the work is being carried out.
