Appropriate isolation measures in place, says BHS
The British Horse Society is warning that a single case the highly-contagious Strangles infection has very recently been identified at a yard on the island.
It's one of the most common diseases, affecting around 600 outbreaks in the UK each year, and it can have a devastating impact on the animals.
The name - Strangles - comes from the way it can cause lymph nodes to swell to such a size that it restricts the horse's airway.
The Manx branch of the BHS says appropriate isolation measures have been put in place on the yard.
An organised 10km ride-out is taking place around the Earystane Plantation today - the society says no one from the yard is taking part in the event.
It adds: "Veterinary advice confirms there is minimal risk to horses taking part."
"At the same time, we remind you of the correct procedure for preventing disease spread at every event: no nose to nose contact between horses from different yards, do not share water sources and, if dealing with horses other than your own, cleans your hands before and afterwards."
"We will have ample hand wipes available for people to use, if they wish."
