Warning over travelling abroad for medical procedures

In the most extreme cases a number of women who have been treated in the UK after procedures in Turkey have had kidneys removed without their knowledge or consent

Anybody considering travelling abroad for a private medical procedure  is being urged to thoroughly research the country, medical staff and facilities they are planning to use.

The warning from the Island's Interim Director of Public Health Professor Hugo Van Woerden is in response to the growing number of people turning to the National Health Service in Britain after botched procedures abroad.

A growing number of people are ending up in hospital wards with horrific complications after procedures carried out abroad - the majority in Turkey.

A recent survey from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons showed 75 per cent of the cases related to Abdominoplasty and 25 per cent to breast surgery procedures.

In the most extreme cases a number of women who have been treated in the UK after procedures in Turkey have had kidneys removed without their knowledge or consent.

Figures issued in 2022 demonstrated the burden on the NHS as complications from cosmetic surgery abroad rose by 44 per cent. Any Isle of Man residents considering travelling abroad for treatments are advised to check the UK Government Travel Advice.
