Work permit system puts Island at 'competitive disadvantage' says minister

Johnston discusses 'major' vacancy rate in job market

'Major' job vacancy rates across the Island are, in part, behind a decision to temporarily scrap the work permit system.

The Department for Enterprise is hoping to persuade Tynwald members, next month, to suspend them for three years.

Government says 99 percent of work permit applications made currently are approved.

With an aging population, and fewer residents paying tax as a result, Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston says public services could suffer without new faces settling here:
