ATHLETICS: 18th out of field of 400 for Astin in Liverpool Cross Challenge

Perry impresses in U17s category

A number of local athletes were flexing their endurance muscles across the water at the weekend in the Liverpool Cross Challenge.

More than 400 runners were competing in the Senior Women's Race including Sarah Astin (who was representing Belgrave Harriers) and Manx Harriers' Laura Dickinson.

Astin finished in 18th place with a solid run although expressed her disappointment with the result.

Laura Dickinson had a great run to finish in the top third of the field in 139th.

In the Senior Men's Race, Ollie Lockley came in 59th, and Jamie Hayes came in 355th.

Ryan Corrin was flying the Manx flag in the U20's Men's, bagging himself at 138th place finish.

Elsewhere, the U17s Men's Race featured local runners Sam Perry and Cai Lewis, who are both members of Northern AC.

Both put out strong performances to finish 13th and 39th respectively in a field containing the best cross-country runners in the age group in the UK.

Sam's 13th place was a repeat of his placing in the opening round of the British Cross Challenge series a fortnight ago in Cardiff, but the field yesterday was both bigger and stronger.

Cai, who finished 17th in Cardiff, wasn't behind Sam on the first lap and looking really strong, he dropped off a little on the second lap and eventually came in 39th.
