ATHLETICS: Record number of female runners race in Round 2 of Winter Hill League

Rachael Franklin claims second victory

Some leading athletes from the Manx athletics scene have been in high-class cross-country action all over the world over the weekend.

In Florida, USA on Friday, David Mullarkey finished fourth in the NCAA Division I South Region Cross Country Championships. 

His average pace per mile of this 10k cross-country race was 04:37.6.

Elsewhere, three athletes contested the opening round of the UK Cross Challenge in Cardiff. 

Sam Perry finished 13th and Cai Lewis 17th in the U17 Men's race, while Alan Corlett was 37th in the Senior Men's race. - all excellent results.

There was also action to be had back home in the second round of the Winter Hill League.

Although the overall turnout of 140 was just short of the record of 148, the total of 49 female runners was a all-time series record.

Rachael Franklin took her second women's win of the series, with year 13 Maddie McMullan and Year 10 Abi Clayton very impressive in second and third.

Mark Burman produced a really strong second half of the race and pulled away from all his challengers to take a convincing victory by 24 seconds from Nick Colburn who also ran extremely well. Oliver Chambers was comfortably ahead of the chasers in third place.
