Cycling: Cavendish withdraws from UAE Tour stage with illness

Astana Qazaqstan says rider 'felt a small fever this morning'

Mark Cavendish has not taken part in today's sixth stage of the UAE Tour due to 'sickness.'

In a short statement earlier, his team - Astana Qazaqstan - confirmed the 'Manx Missile' did not contest today's race after he 'felt a small fever this morning.'

The team adds the decision will give Cavendish 'time to recover better ahead of his next races.'

Elsewhere, Astana Qazaqstan managed a positive result earlier with sprinter Gleb Syritsa finishing in fifth place.

The seventh and final phase of the tour is due to take place tomorrow (25 February) with a 161km route from Al Ain to Jebel Hafeet.
