Prescriptions may only be tip of iceberg

An MHK has lodged his concerns over a planned rise in prescription fees - but is warning similar levies are on the way.

A consultation on the controversial proposals has now been extended with the responses due before Tynwald in the coming months.

North Douglas MHK David Ashford will this week ask the Health Minister a number of questions on the plans, including exactly how much she expects to save by increasing contributions and cutting exemptions.

But Mr Ashford - who co-ordinated a recent Treasury scheme on cost-cutting - claims prescriptions may only be the first in a long line of cuts.

Mr Ashford said: ' I do think we do have to be realistic about that - I'm as realistic as anyone about that. There are going to have to be  savings. The Treasury has made clear they've got the 25 million that has to be found.  But again it comes down to me, ensuring that any savings that are made are made in a fair and equitable manner, and I just do not believe that these proposal as they stand are fair and equitable'.
