Manks Concert in memory of Sophia Morrison - Padjer Columb Killey: A Manx song performed by Caarjyn Cooidjagh
The traditional blessing in Manx Gaelic relating to the Irish Saint, St. Columba. The words were collected by Sophia Morrison at the start of the 20th Century, and the music later by Mona Douglas.
The words of the prayer appeared at the end of Sophia Morrison’s ‘Manx Fairy Tales’, with the title, ‘An Ancient Charm Against the Fairies’:
Peace of God and peace of man,
Peace of God on Columb-Killey,
On each window and each door,
On every hole admitting moonlight,
On the four corners of the house,
On the place of my rest,
And peace of God on myself.
The song is performed here by the prize-winning Manx language choir Caarjyn Cooidjagh.
This is a part of the “Manks Concert” marking the anniversary of the death of Sophia Morrison.
Held at the Peel Centenary Centre on the 14th of January 2017, it marked the 100th anniversary of the death of this great figure of Manx cultural history.
