Women Today listen again: Jill Quirk, Flo Watts, Peter Kelly and Brian Whitehead

We were joined today by two of the leading members of The Arts Society Isle of Man, Chair of the Society Jill Quirk and Secretary Florence Watts, who told us all about the history and objectives of the group, talked about their lectures past and present and gave us information about this week's special talk: on Thursday 25th October at Mount Murray Golf Clubhouse, Antiques Roadshow expert Marc Allum will give a fascinating look at the folklore, history and psychology of collecting, followed in the afternoon by a ‘Bring an Object’ talk in which Marc spontaneously describes items brought in by the audience which is a fun, informative and inclusive session with a mini Antiques Roadshow flavour. Call Pamela Martin on 613826 to find out more about the events and the Society itself.

We also spoke with historian Peter Kelly about an annual joint lecture of the Isle of Man Victorian Society and Manx National Heritage; entitled ‘We will remember them – the art of the Great War" he will be giving a tour of the Island's memorials, some of which were designed by Archibad Knox. The talk takes place in the lecture theatre at the Manx Museum on 3rd November commencing at 2.30pm, doors open at 2pm. Admission is free.

And we were also joined by Brian Whitehead, Chair of the Royal British Legion Onchan Branch, who told us about the various events taking part in the Village to mark three significant events: the 80th Anniversary of the Onchan branch itself, 100 years since the Great War and 100 years of the Royal Air Force. Their next event is on Wednesday evening in the Village Hall at the top of Royal Avenue, with the Musicale Choir, Arthur Cowley and the Laxey Bell Ringers.
