At Your Service

Sunday, 10 January 2021 - 30 minutes

Our thoughts, prayers and music today come from our archive of church services recorded around the Island over the past 20 years.  This morning, we're going to St George's Church in Douglas, to hear extracts from two services  - a celebration of the 225th Anniversary of the Church (October 2006) and a Service of Re-Dedication following a major programme of refurbishment of the inside of the church (December 2007)

The Warrington Male Voice Choir happened to be on the Island at the time of the Anniversary Service, and lent their voices to the celebration, with conductor Russell Patterson, and their own organist Anthony Whittaker.  St George's resident organist, Mr Harvey Easton, plays for the congregational hymns for both services.

The Archdeacon of Man, and Vicar of St George's, the Venerable Brian Smith (2005 - 2011) leads both services, but by the time of the Re-Dedication Service, the Island was without a Bishop, as the Rt Rev'd Graeme Knowles had just left to take up his post as Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, and his successor had yet to be appointed.   So in December 2007,  the Island was in the care of the Bishop of Warrington, the Rt Rev'd David Jennings, and so he preached at the Re-Dedication Service.

As you listen, bear in mind that these recordings were made some 14 years ago .... yet their message is so very appropriate for the present time!
Next week on AT YOUR SERVICE we'll be delving into the archives again, to feature a Covenant Service - traditionally held in Methodist churches at the start of each new year.  This is one we recorded some years ago  - and be warned - it involves a talkative penguin !

And I still welcome the opportunity to play the hymns you'd love to hear on the programme - email me - judithley@manxradio.com
