AT YOUR SERVICE - 10 MAY 2020

At Your Service

Sunday, 10 May 2020 - 30 minutes

Had it not been for the Covid-19 pandemic, Services of Celebration and Commemoration would have been taking place around the Island, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the end of the war in Europe - VE Day - the 8th of May 1945.
So, using prayers, hymns and reflections which would have formed a major part of those services, and presented by people who would themselves have been taking part, AT YOUR SERVICE today pays tribute to the millions of men and women at home and abroad, who gave so much, so we can now know freedom.
The hymns today are the same ones used at the very first Service of Thanksgiving held in Westminster Abbey, 75 years ago.
The prayers are led by the Archdeacon of Man, The Venerable Andi Brown who is also IOM County Chaplain to the Royal British Legion, and to the Royal Air Force Association Isle of Man.
Before coming to the Island, The Lord Bishop, the Rt Rev Peter Eagles, gained over 20 years' experience in military service, first as Chaplain to the Forces and then as Archdeacon to the Army. Today, he reflects on what he feels is at the heart of this anniversary.
Marc Tyley is a familiar voice on weekday mornings on Manx Radio - but before coming to the Island he worked for almost 30 years as a British Forces broadcaster in many different parts of the world, often broadcasting from present day war zones. He reads A Tribute To The Millions - a reflection specially written for this anniversary, and Unmentioned in Despatches - a poem which recognising that not everyone came home to a hero's welcome.
Reverend Jo Dudley is Vicar of Christ Church in Laxey. For her, as for so many people, this anniversary is full of very personal family memories, which she shares here.
And there is one stunning piece of instrumental music from Manx-born musician Jason Evans, who is Principal Trumpet with the Philharmonia Orchestra. To say any more would spoil the surprise!

In order to match the theme of the programme - as mentioned earlier - our hymns today were taken from the first VE Day Service of Thanksgiving, held in Westminster Abbey.
But next week I'll be turning back to my list of YOUR favourite hymns - so do please email me with your choice and, from the list, each week I'll play two hymns that you've chosen.
And if you'd like your hymn choice to be dedicated to someone else who listens to AT YOUR SERVICE, it will be my pleasure to mention them - just give me the details along with your hymn title.
YOU CAN EMAIL ME - judithley@manxradio.com

Wishing you a peaceful and healthy week ahead
