AT YOUR SERVICE - 16 AUGUST 2020

At Your Service

Sunday, 16 August 2020 - 30 minutes

Nearly a hundred and fifty years ago, a vicar's wife in Hampshire started an organisation which she hoped would help local women, by supporting and strengthening their family life.  Today, that same  organisation - the Mothers' Union - has over 4 million members and operates in 84 countries world-wide.
In August each year,  the work of Mothers' Union founder Mary Sumner is celebrated in a special service that draws together MU  members from all around the Island.  This year, our Founders Day service was in St Matthew's Church in Douglas and At Your Service brings you the key moments from it.
Diocesan President (leader) of the Mothers' Union on the Island is Mrs Gail Eagles, and she explains why - after all these years -  remembering Mary Sumner is still very relevant.
The service was also a time to say 'thank you and farewell' to Father Ben Bradshaw and his wife Danielle, both of whom have held office in the Mothers' Union - Fr Ben as Chaplain, and Danielle as Secretary.  They are now moving to Walsingham in Norfolk, where Fr Ben has been appointed as the Shrine Priest.
Fr Ben reflects on the Gospel reading from the Founder's Day service  and Danielle shares some thoughts on parenting their two daughters.
And of course there's music, too!
We end with an invitation - and a short time of prayer - from Phil Craine.
If the idea of making a pilgrimage appeals to you - without leaving the Island, and with the option to walk for as long or as short a distance as you wish - then the 4 days of walking which Phil is leading over the Bank Holiday weekend (28  - 31 August) might be perfect for you!
All the details are in the podcast, and you can contact Phil via email - philcraine44@gmail.com - if you want to know more.
And if you'd like to request your favourite hymn to be played in a forthcoming edition of  At Your Service  - (and maybe dedicate your choice to a friend who listens along with you?) email the details to me - judithley@manxradio.com  I'd love to hear from you.
