Manks Concert in memory of Sophia Morrison - ‘Bons’ - A poem by Cushag, performed by Christine Bregazzi
Perhaps the most beautiful poem ever written in Manx dialect, ‘Bons’ was first published in ‘Poems by Cushag’ in 1908. At that time, it was not widely know that “Cushag” was the pen-name of Josephine Kermode, but the quality of her poems would soon lead to her being identified and referred to as the Island’s greatest poet after T. E. Brown.
Kermode was a great friend of Sophia Morrison, working together on many projects, including the first ever Manx dialect theatre plays. Kermode would send her work to Morrison for her comments up until her untimely death in 1917.
The poem is her recited by Christine Bregazzi.
This is a part of the “Manks Concert” marking the anniversary of the death of Sophia Morrison.
Held at the Peel Centenary Centre on the 14th of January 2017, it marked the 100th anniversary of the death of this great figure of Manx cultural history.
