Manks Concert in memory of Sophia Morrison - 'The Manannan Song' - A traditional Manx performed by the Peel Clothworkers’ School choir
The choir of the Peel Clothworkers’ Primary School perform the traditional Manx song, ‘The Manannan Song.’ This was collected by Mona Douglas RBV from a Mrs Shimmin of Foxdale in 1921.
The choir is conducted by Richard Corlett.
It was the Peel Clothworkers’ School which Sophia Morrison and her siblings attended in the 19th Century, decades before she emerged as the leading figure in the survival and revival of traditional Manx culture on the Isle of Man.
Morrison saw that the key factor in the survival of the Manx language and traditional singing was the involvement of the young. It is therefore very fitting to have this Manx song performed by pupils of her former school, 100 years after her own involvement in Manx work came to an end.
This is a part of the “Manks Concert” marking the anniversary of the death of Sophia Morrison.
Held at the Peel Centenary Centre on the 14th of January 2017, it marked the 100th anniversary of the death of this great figure of Manx cultural history.
