Commissioners say Tesco takeover brings uncertainty for local areas

Concerns about staff and support for Manx producers

Local authorities around the Island have been reacting to the news that Tesco is taking over Shoprite on the Isle of Man. 

The retailing giant has bought all nine stores in a deal which is believed to put around 60 jobs, predominantly at head office, at risk.

Tesco is said to have taken 21-year leases on the premises around the Island but it’s led to questions about how much Manx produce will be stocked.

Peel Commissioner Hazel Hannan says, due to her previous experience in government as agriculture minister, she’s worried about what it could mean for farmers.

And Rob Cowell, from Ramsey Commissioners, says Shoprite has been in the town for 'decades' supporting various good causes. 

He believes change is inevitable:
