Current work permit system fosters 'uncertainty'

Tynwald vote will take place in November

The current work permit system on the Isle of Man prejudices those who want to stay here for the long term.

That's from Chief Officer for the Department of Enterprise Mark Lewin who has given evidence to the Economic Policy Review Committee.

He says those who have moved here on a work permit are often unable to move around the job market or buy a house, due to uncertainty over whether it will be renewed year on year.

He also says the department has heard similar complaints from employers:

A vote on suspending the Island's work permit system was due to be put before Tynwald today (17 October).

However due to 'timing issues over the summer recess and the deadline for uploading to the Register of Business' this vote will now take place next month.
