Drink driver who flipped car onto roof is banned from road

57-year-old's advocate tells court crash was a 'wake-up call'

A drink driver who crashed his car into a verge, causing it to flip onto its roof, has been banned from the road for a year.

David Neil Savage, from Ellersie in Crosby, was more than one and a half times over the legal limit when he lost control of his Honda CRV on 16 September.

At Douglas Courthouse the 57-year-old admitted drink driving on Old Church Road – the court heard significant damage was caused to his vehicle.

During sentencing Savage’s advocate told the court his client had held his driving licence since 1986 and in that time had ‘never had so much as a parking ticket’ adding: “It’s a very sad end to that licence.”

Describing the crash as a ‘wake-up call’ he said Savage had ‘been through quite a bit recently’ and was struggling with his alcohol intake.

“This is a gentleman who has struggled asking for him. He’s having the help whether he asks for it or not,” the advocate told the court adding: “This is a gentleman who is deeply sorry for his actions.”

Fining Savage £1200, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £125, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told him: “It could have been a great deal worse. It is clear that this is very much out of character.”

Savage will remain disqualified until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test.
