Fine for man who made 'empty threats' after money went missing

42-year-old told man: "I'm going to hammer your head"

A Douglas man has been fined £750 after making ‘empty threats’ of violence to a neighbour he believed had stolen money from him.

Leigh Allen, of Derby Road, was told he should have gone to the police instead during sentencing at Douglas Courthouse.

The 42-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence of affray after getting into an argument with the man at his former home, on Mona Street, on 16 June.

He approached the resident, who lived in his block of flats, accusing him of stealing £150 from his property two days earlier telling him: “I’m going to hammer your head.”

Allen’s advocate described his words as an ‘idle threat’ telling the court: “He has, as a consequence of this, lost his home.”

Ordering Allen to pay prosecution costs of £125 High Bailiff James Brooks told him: “I am going to sentence you on the basis that this was out of character for you.”
