Hooper: 'Braddan should have budgeted prudently'

Dismisses claims ministers told authority to double its rates

Government says it is ‘crucial’ that all local authorities set effective rates in order to ensure their budgets balance.

It follows comments made by the chair of Braddan Commissioners who claimed his authority was told to double its rates to address the access concerns at its new leisure centre.

Andrew Jessopp told Manx Radio the treasury, infrastructure and health ministers urged the authority to pass the cost of lost income to ratepayers.

Braddan has upped its rates to almost 37 percent - the largest increase across all of the Island's authorities for the year ahead.
