It's hoped the mystery of who painted it will finally be solved
A famous portrait of Illiam Dhone is undergoing a specialist study in the hope of discovering who painted it.
It's the only known likeness of the martyr, who was executed for high treason in 1663 for his involvement in the Manx Rebellion.
The painting is being taken to Harrogate where it will be studied under infrared light to show any hidden details or the original sketches.
It's hoped it will also help reveal the original colours, which have been heavily impacted by aging, as well as an artist's signature.
