Peel Road flats: DoI refutes 'overruling' solar panel decision

Councillor's claims dismissed by housing division

The Department of Infrastructure has refuted claims by a Douglas Councillor that the department 'overruled' a decision to put solar panels on the new Peel Road flats.

Manx Labour Party member Devon Watson says they were included in the original plans for the new apartments on Peel Road, but they were told they weren't necessary.

In response, however, the DoI's Public Estates and Housing division says, whilst it does collaborate with local authorities on certain major projects, it was not made aware of any intention, or involved in any discussions, around installing solar panels on the Peel Road properties.

It adds - the approved drawings and specification make no note of the inclusion of the panels.

Meanwhile, it says: 'Discussions with Douglas Borough Council regarding the inclusion of photo-voltaic or solar panels have taken place with regard to the emerging Willaston apartments scheme.'

'These remain ongoing and the Department awaits further information about the proposals from officers at Douglas Borough Council.'
