DoI 'overturned' decision to have solar panels on Peel Road flats, claims Councillor

They were refused for the new apartments on Peel Road claims Douglas councillor

A Douglas councillor has claimed the Department of Infrastructure 'overruled' their decision to put solar panels on some of their new-build homes.

Manx Labour Party member Devon Watson says they were included in the original plans for the new apartments on Peel Road, but they were told they weren't necessary.

He says it's deeply frustrating:

In response a spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure says 'The [Department's] Public Estates and Housing division collaborates with local authorities on major projects which require housing deficiency payments from Isle of Man Government to ensure the viability of essential public housing.'

'The division was involved in the Peel Road project throughout the planning stages and in the early stages of construction and was not made aware of any intention to install photo-voltaic or solar panels. Indeed, the approved drawings and specification make no note of the inclusion of photo-voltaic cells or panels and the Department fully supported the new development throughout its construction phase to completion. We can say that the Department has never been involved in discussions with Douglas Borough Council or any of its officers about solar or photovoltaic panels in respect of the Peel Road project.'

'Discussions with Douglas Borough Council regarding the inclusion of photo-voltaic or solar panels have taken place with regard to the emerging Willaston apartments scheme. These remain ongoing and the Department awaits further information about the proposals from officers at Douglas Borough Council.'
