People urged to avoid using disposable BBQ's during dry spell

Fire and Rescue Service urges consideration of potential fire risks

People are being urged to avoid using disposable barbeques – and dispose of their litter properly – during the hot weather the Island is currently experiencing.

Thirty firefighters spent more than six hours putting out a 1KM blaze on Greeba Mountain at the weekend.

Hours before the incident the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture had issued a warning of heightened risks of wildfire.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service says it was one of a number of fires it has attended due to ‘carelessness and dry vegetation’.

Firefighter Sean Bostrom, and DEFA's Uplands Manager Shaun Gelling, told Manx Radio in many instances the callouts could be avoided:
