Teen who pulled knife on passer-by told to turn his life around

17-year-old fractured man's cheekbone in NYE assault

A teenager from Douglas has been told to ‘utilise his work ethic’ and turn his life around after pulling a knife on a man before fracturing his cheekbone.

Kyle James Reeder, of Peveril Road, was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse after admitting assaulting the victim and causing grievous bodily harm on New Year’s Eve.

The 17-year-old was on Central Promenade, at 11pm on 31 December, when he walked past the man who was sitting on a bench; he greeted Reeder but called him the wrong name.

In response Reeder started fighting with him, punching him in the face and brandishing the Swiss army knife asking: “Do you want this in your neck?”

When police arrived Reeder attempted to run away before kicking an officer in the head and neck; he was eventually restrained using PAVA spray.

In interview the teen insisted he carried the knife for ‘self-defence’.

Reeder’s advocate told the court his client was remorseful.

Describing him as ‘immature’ he added: “He is a young man who needs some further assistance to get back on the right track.”

Ordering the teen to work with the probation service for 18 months Magistrates told him: “You have absolutely no reason to be walking about with a knife … this could have ended much worse than it did.”
