Cycling: Zak Walker crowned national champion at Jurby

Sophie Smith takes women's title at crit championships

A dominant display in the north of the Island at the weekend saw Zak Walker crowned the 2023 Manx closed circuit national champion.

Walker was one of the strong field of competitors taking part in the Isle of Man Criterium Championships elite race at Jurby on Sunday (10 September).

A fast-paced and frenetic contest saw Walker take top spot ahead of Niall Colquitt in second with the final podium spot going to Callum Salisbury in third.

Meanwhile, Sophie Smith took the women's title finishing fourth in the support race.

Among the other titles decided during the event, Cian Howard came second in the bunch sprint to take the youth title whilst Colquitt claimed the junior title having acquired the most points over the season.

Among the honours also was Richard Fletcher - who took 11th spot in the elite race - as he secured the veterans title.

Elsewhere, the support race saw Cameron Hounsell claim victory with Tom Broadbent and Nicholas Whitehouse securing second and third respectively.
