Calls for a Children's Commissioner to help address 'failings' within care system

Onchan MHK seeks debate in November Tynwald

A former Children's Champion on the Island says the role is too restricted and has called for the introduction of a 'Children's Commissioner'.

Rob Callister says the Ofsted report into Children's Social Care Services, published earlier this month, shows 'serious failings' within the system.

The role itself would have a broader scope than the currently installed Children's Champion - which acts as voice for kids who are in care, young carers and children with complex needs.

The Onchan MHK, who went through the care system himself as a youngster, has called for it to be debated in November's Tynwald:

Health and Social Care Minister Lawrie Hooper told Manx Radio he doesn't believe the role of Children's Champion is too restricted, and he'd have to be convinced of the need for a commissioner role:

Rob Callister's motion calling for a general debate on the Ofsted report has been seconded by the current Children's Champion Kerry Sharpe MLC.
