Betting firm applies for new premises

Bookies bets move will pay dividends

A busy row of shops in Douglas could get a new betting shop if planners give the green light.

Joe Jennings Bookmakers has applied to convert a former off licence on Prospect Terrace into a bookies.

The business says it already has premises on the terrace, but wants to move, so it has more space for customers.

In its application, the company says it hopes to transfer the existing shop licence into its new premises, and although it might hold two licences if the new one is granted, only one would trade at any one time.

Richard Peett, the firm’s managing director, says applying for planning permission is only the first stage in moving the business.

He says it is committed to only hold both licences whilst fits out the new shop and on opening it will surrender the existing licence, thereby maintaining the status quo.

Mr Peett adds his company has yet to apply to the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission for the shop’s betting licence.
