Brexit intel at UK farming conference

DEFA team soaks up latest thinking

An MHK says his presence at a major UK farming conference proved an opportunity to explore the implications of Brexit on rural industries.

Political member in the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture Tim Baker led a delegation to the Oxford Farming Conference, a high-profile event with an 80 year history.

Speakers included the UK Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom, the Scottish National Party's Westminster farming spokesman and Northern Ireland's agriculture minister.

Mr Baker says his team used the event to discuss the potential impact of EU departure with counterparts in neighbouring jurisdictions.

The conference theme Thrive or Survive highlighted the growing business focus in farming.

Mr Baker says the latest thinking will be passed onto the local industry and will influence the Food Matters strategy, which aims to drive up the economic value of Manx food and drink.
