The Isle of Man’s Ship Register has passed another milestone.
It's exceeded the 15 million Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) mark for the first time in its history with the registration of one of the largest ships in the world this month.
The "Berge Neblina" is a specialist carrier, built to transport iron ore from Brazil to China. At 195,000 GRT and with a length of 345 metres, the vessel is one of the largest afloat and is capable of carrying 388,000 Tonnes of cargo.
It's operated by Berge Bulk a subsidiary of the BW Group, based in Singapore.
Director of Isle of Man Ship Registry Dick Welsh says as with all vessels built and delivered from shipyards in the far east, the Manx office was open to coincide with the timing of the signing ceremony in the region on 4 January.
He added this meant the vessel could be registered in the Isle of Man just after midnight, a service which few of the Island's competitors can match.
