Industry representatives appeal to government


The Isle of Man Government is being urged to save jobs in the local construction industry by maintaining its financial commitment to building and maintenance projects.

The call has come from industry representatives, who recently made a presentation to the Council of Ministers about where construction currently stands in the Island, and the possible implications of cutting capital spending.

The sector accounts for around 15 per cent of the Isle of Man's gross national product and employs about 6,000 people.

There have been calls in some quarters to reduce capital spending to help balance the government's books, in the wake of the redrawing of the VAT revenue sharing agreement.

But Tim Cowin, one of those who made the presentation, says if that happened there would be serious financial repercussions in other ways:
