Investment in Heysham pays dividends

Manx-based businessman John Whittaker is celebrating after new figures showed traffic through the port of Heysham has grown 25 per cent year-on-year.

The Lancashire port is owned by Peel Ports, which is part of Mr Whittaker's Peel Group.

The data, for the first six months of 2011, follows steady growth over the last 18 months and reflects Peel Ports' million pound investment in the port.

Figures from the United Kingdom's Department for Transport show in the first half of 2011 Heysham handled more than 225,000 units, which was 45,000 up on the same period in 2010.

Heysham Port's general manager Brian Davies says he is confident of further growth for the remainder of this year, and the company has invested further in infrastructure to accommodate it.
