MER and Swing Bridge on awards list

Salute to iconic feats of Manx engineering

Two of the glories of Manx Victorian engineering have been nominated for a heritage award.

They are the Manx Electric Railway which opened in 1894 and the Ramsey Swing Bridge, which has been taking traffic over the town's harbour since 1892.

The designers of the swing bridge were responsible for the Victoria Falls Bridge over the Zambezi River in Africa. More than 1,000 men were involved in constructing the MER at its peak.

The pair of structures have been nominated for the North West Civil Engineering Awards along with nine other notable feats, including the Carlisle to Settle Railway and the Liver Building in Liverpool.

The award winner will be announced in Blackpool on 10 March 2017.
