Mooir Vannin: A gateway to a more secure energy future for the Isle of Man

In addition to around £2 billion in revenues paid to Isle of Man Treasury, Ørsted has put forward two options for some of the electricity from its proposed Mooir Vannin Offshore Wind Farm to come to the Island. 

If Manx Utilities and the Isle of Man Government choose one of these options, Mooir Vannin would become an important part of the Island’s future energy system.

Ørsted is working in partnership with Manx Utilities and Isle of Man Government to explore possibilities for how to bring power to the Island. Here are the two options that have been identified:

• A new electricity cable directly between the wind farm and the Island.

Or

• Connect the wind farm solely to the UK grid, with the option to supply the Island through the existing Manx 1 IOM-UK subsea interconnector with cheaper wholesale green electricity.

Energy security is a vital foundation for all strong economies, so Mooir Vannin could be become the backbone of a new, more secure era for the Island.

1: Greater energy security

Because there are two options to bring some of the electricity it generates to the Isle of Man, Mooir Vannin has the potential to support the Island’s energy security and energy independence goals. In addition to being aligned with the Isle of Man Government’s Energy Strategy, the offshore wind farm would also support the Our Island Plan, Net Zero Strategy, and contribute to enhancing the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere status because renewable energy is aligned with the UN’s Sustainability Goals.

2: Less exposure to volatile international gas prices

At present, the Isle of Man relies heavily on importing gas to generate electricity at its main power station in Pulrose. Spikes in international gas prices can and do have an impact on wholesale energy costs for electricity generation, and in turn this affects bills paid by residents and businesses. Energy costs are a major concern for Isle of Man businesses now, and are likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. The Business Environment & Conditions Survey Report, published by the Isle of Man Government Cabinet Office in November 2025, found that inflation and energy prices were the most common challenges facing businesses, affecting more than 30% of respondents.

3: Supports replacement of ageing generating assets

The Isle of Man will have to make some big decisions about replacing the main gas fuelled power station it currently relies on to generate most of the Island’s electricity. Mooir Vannin would generate 1.4 Gigawatts (equal to 1,400 Megawatts) of electricity, with most of that power going to the UK, and the Island benefitting from around £2 billion in seabed and taxation revenues going to Isle of Man Treasury. But Ørsted is also offering the Isle of Man Government and Manx Utilities the option to bring around 100 Megawatts from Mooir Vannin to the Isle of Man’s grid. Official figures for current peak time electricity usage, and future estimates, show that 100 Megawatts will be enough to provide a strong foundation for the Island’s long-term electricity needs, and support the transition away from reliance on fossil fuels.

4: Supports Island Plan and Net Zero ambitions

Wind energy supports the Isle of Man Government’s Our Island Plan long-term economic strategy, and its net-zero policy objectives. The government’s continued commitment to exploring revenue opportunities from offshore energy development has been supported by economic policies for more than a decade. In this context, Mooir Vannin would be a logical next step for the Isle of Man to begin to utilise its territorial seas to generate revenues for Treasury from taxation and seabed rental, gain energy security benefits, by harvesting power from the Island’s most abundant natural energy resource.

5: Helps businesses meet ESG objectives

International businesses, including those in sectors that are vital to the Island’s economy, are demanding cheaper, stable energy and green power to reduce costs and support Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies. Mooir Vannin has a role to play in this context because offshore wind farms are a proven, reliable, technology that can deliver large-scale, low-carbon electricity while maintaining harmony with the marine environment and local industries
