Support scheme to help fishing industry extended

Covid still affecting demand from export markets

Up to £285,000 is being offered to help the Island's struggling fishing industry.

An amended coronavirus support scheme will aim to assist in the face of lower market demand, from the UK and Europe, as well as increased export costs due to Brexit.

Eligible boat owners, and fishing businesses, can apply for grants to cover fixed costs for another 12 weeks - backdated to 2 April and up to 25 June.

Environment, Food & Agriculture Minister Geoffrey Boot says it's hoped the cash injection will help retain crew, carry out maintenance and assist with cash flow.

Covid-related restrictions have resulted in a decline in demand from export markets - the market price for some products has dropped by up to 40 per cent.
