£18.3m project makes 'huge dent' in hospital waiting lists

Manx Care now hoping to secure funding to tackle outpatient backlog

An £18.3m project to cut waiting lists for some inpatient operations has made 'a huge dent'.

That's from Manx Care's director of health services after the second phase of the healthcare board's restoration and recovery scheme concluded.

The initiative has seen UK provider Synaptik carry out more than 3,000 procedures, including cataract, hip and hernia operations.

Manx Care is now hoping to secure funding for a third phase to tackle its outpatient waiting list, with 10,800 people currently awaiting a first appointment, and more than 30,000 waiting for follow-ups.

If the business case is approved, it's expected work to cut the backlog would take place over an 18-month period.
