Francisco Manuel Alcalá Corpas of Huawei explains the benefits of 5G

Manx Telecom hosts promo event

Manx Telecom's chief commercial officer says whilst work towards the roll-out of 5G technology on the Island is under way, it's still got a long way to go before the public sees tangible change.

Ed Jennings, who is new to the role, was speaking at this afternoon's 5G demonstration at the Manx Telecom HQ.

The event was designed to showcase the opportunities created by introducing the next network development to the Island.

Senior figures from MT were joined by global communications company Huawei and its '5G is now' roadshow, Chief Minister Howard Quayle, Enterprise Minister Laurence Skelly and invited guests.

The firm says customers will be able to download films in 10 seconds instead of 10 minutes under the new system, and that it will drive business and economic growth.

5G is being rolled out in three stages, with the first of those already in motion.

In July, it was announced the Isle of Man had slipped backwards in a ranking of countries based upon internet connectivity, from 50th place in 2017 to 62nd this year.

Average speeds over the year prior to the results stood at 10.54 Mbps - compared to speeds of up to 60 Mbps in Singapore, which ranked first - whilst the UK was 35th and Jersey broke into the top ten.

A national strategy on broadband is set to be published soon, with a target of tripling the Island's average broadband offering by 2020.
