77th Cronky Ploughing match today

The first, and perhaps most famous, ploughing match of the year in the Isle of Man is due to take place today.

The 77th Cronk y Voddy event is being staged at Ballakilmurrey on the Poortown Road out of Peel.

It gets underway at 10.30 and runs through to 3.15 this afternoon.

There are classes for Manx and World style ploughing, vintage tractors and the ever popular horse drawn ploughs. The best horses competition will be judged by President of Tynwald, Claire Christian.

Hot food, homemade cakes, tea and coffee will be available in the marquee.

A prize presentation, concert and supper takes place at 7.45 this evening at the Methodist Hall in St John's when a cheque from the Cronk y Voddy ploughing society will be presented to Ronald McDonald House Alder Hey Childrens Hospital.

(To get to Ballkilmurrey you turn left at Ballig Bridge on the TT course, just beyond Ballacraine, and head towards Peel. The field is on the right, close to the old entrance to the Poortown Quarry)
